Frequently Asked Questions

What Vaccines Are Required?

All dogs that visit Burning River K9 for boarding and lessons are required to be up to date on age appropriate vaccines including Distemper, Parvovirus, Adenovirus, Parainfluenza, Bordetella and Rabies.  While not required, we highly recommend that all dogs also be vaccinated for Leptospirosis, Lyme, and Canine Influenza.

How Old Should my dog be?

We have programs appropriate for puppies and dogs of all ages. In person lessons and our Puppy Head Start program start as early as 8 weeks.

What Training Methods Do You Use?

Burning River K9 utilizes balanced training methods.  Each dog is evaluated and a training plan is designed to help you learn to work with your dog and foster a better relationship.  Tools such as prong collars, e collars, harnesses, slip leads, and halters are some of the tools you may see in use.  We believe that each dog is an individual and that one size does not fit all.

Where Do The Board and Train Dogs Stay?

Our partnership with The Wright Pet allows us to provide top of the line care for your dogs during their time with us.

Can You Certify My Dog As A Service Dog?

There is no certification for service dogs in the United States.  A service dog is defined under the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) as “dogs that are individually trained to do work or perform tasks for people with disabilities”.   Beyond that, service dogs must have the correct temperament and training to work in public.  We are happy to evaluate and provide recommendations to help you achieve your training goals or provide assistance in picking an appropriate service dog prospect.

What Tasks Can My Service Dog Be Trained To Do?

I have successfully trained dogs to indicate the presence of allergens such as peanut, tree nut, dairy and gluten in the presence of food, retrieval of dropped objects, retrieval of objects by name, block, cover, diabetic alert, hallucination discernment, turning lights on and off, opening and closing doors, behavior interruption, deep pressure therapy, pressing buttons to open doors, pressing buttons to call for help in an emergency.

Looking For A Professional?

Taking the first step towards training your dog can be the hardest part of the journey. Finding someone whose goal is to help you take that first step is an important part of getting your dog the careful training it needs. Don’t wait—together, we can take that first step and put our best feet (and paws!) forward.
